This week, the focus is on an article titled “New population estimate suggests only 356 North Atlantic right whales left” published by Nova Scotia on CBC website on Oct 29, 2020. It’s an interesting concept in that, other than it happening in the focus region, it’s causing is also geographical. According the author of this article, the endangered North Atlantic right whale population has dropped from 409 last year to just 356 whales. The high declining rate it’s a major problem because if appropriate measures are not taken it will lead to their extinction. According to consortium chairperson, people’s responsibility is to protect these whales rather than killing them.
“Feeling like the floor is falling out from underneath you” words by Philip Hamilton, a research scientist at Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life. It’s a difficult moment for him as he has dedicated his life to researching and protecting these whales but at the end the numbers keep decreasing and people do not even care about them. However, due to emergency call to protect these animals. Canada's federal government has responded well by putting in place protection measures such as temporary and permanent fisheries closures. These measures will reducing whales’ death rate that is caused by fishermen.
In conclusion, environment and nature is part of us, and we belong to the nature. It’s a wakeup call to all of us to protect our environments as well as other living things that beautify it and balance our ecosystem. Proper and applicable measures need to be put in place to ensure fishermen do it appropriately without killing or endangering other species.
