Based on the reading in this unit, private sector employees have the right to strike. Reflect on whether you believe that public sector employees should be given the right to strike. Explain your rationale, and offer examples to illustrate your opinions.
The federal law in the United States does not allow the public sector employees to strike. However, there are certain states in the country that have provided an allowance or the public sector employees to strike. On the basis of ensuring that there is no delay in the service delivery of the key services being done by the public sector employees, these employees should not be allowed to strike. In the city of Vancouver in the British Columbia, there was a time when the public workers went on strike and the key services were
interrupted. Garbage piled up on the streets, in homes and on the sidewalk because there was no one single person who had come to pick up the garbage. The citizens became so much inconvenienced because of the fact that the pools were not maintained and even the transportation services became so much paralyzed. It is for such reasons that the public sector employees should not be allowed to strike because the services they provide are as important as they benefit a large number of people. However, their lack of rights does not mean that the government should come in and frustrate them. Rather, they need to be given the best conditions ever where they will not have any grievances.
