Are any of the data collection strategies commonly used in your field? Identify a data collection

In my field, the most common data collection strategies used is the interviews where researchers interview the police members; superiors and the juniors and sometimes the victims and public who are witnesses are interviewed to get their opinion on the matter at hand. They also use questionnaires and surveys where they are filled by respondents. The questionnaires or surveys might be administered online or in person depending on the method the researcher feels fit for his or her research. Documents and records are another commonly used method to collect data since every case that is done, the records and documents are stored and all evidences stored. This is a good way we can find the data or information we search for in the future. It is basically one of the most used method to collect data in the criminal and justice sector because proper records are kept and cases may related with each time.

Identify a data collection strategy that is not commonly used in your field. Discuss either why it is not a good fit or make a brief case as to why professionals in your field should start using it.

The strategy that I think is not commonly used is observation. In criminal justice, everything needs to be supported by evidence and that is the only way we prove if something is a fact or not. This means that observations or oral evidence is never used much and cannot be taken as the best source of information until backed up by some concrete evidence. This is not commonly used because it can easily be manipulated and bias as people interpret information differently. Two people can see the same thing but give different interpretation to it which can easily distort the truth about the idea. However, it can also be a good way in which professionals who observe it can make conclusion since they are trained to make proper observations and make constructive conclusions based on what they have seen. It will also bring a new light to what happens in their field which they might have ignored. Observation helps give more information and reality of what happens from a witness’s point of view which can help one make various inference.

How might you be able to use what you learned in this module in your life, personally and/or professionally?

From what I learned in the module, I can improve how I do my duty without causing harm to the innocent. I have learned the importance of making proper judgments and how my actions might affect other people. The little things we term as normal might not be just common occurrences but have a greater impact to other people and lives and end up affecting our ethical actions and or professional credibility. The module has taught me a lot on what I had ignored thinking it is irrelevant
